Great blog Pete.

Shanny was on the right track until he was taken off of it. I think the Wyz suspension had something to do with it. I agree with your assessment of Moore/Naslund/Bertuzzi as the lack of a suspension led to the retaliation. It's too bad they even look at the players name and number before deciding their fate. It really shouldn't matter who's on the receiving end nor who's doling out the hit.

I got a chuckle out of Neale's call on the Domi hit. I had forgotten all about it.

League happened to miss Malkin's Elbow to the head of Grossman which led to a concussion the other night.

Great blog - thoughtful take on an issue that few people seem to think about much before speaking.
IMO people (myself included) who talk about how much "dirtier" the game has gotten are making the same mistake as the ones who talk about how there used to be "respect" in the game, and your blog was an excellent reminder of the fact. Both groups are looking backwards through different lenses of the same rose-coloured glasses.
I'm of the opinion that hockey hits (borderline legal yet overenthusiastic in ferocity) now have slightly greater chance of causing injury because of a combination of removing the red line (good) and players now wear a hard shelled armour/weapon hybrid on their elbows and shoulders (bad). Give the players the soft padding at shoulders and elbows like back in the day and this problem is solved before it becomes a really big problem. In ten years the players will likely be 3 inches taller and 30 pounds heavier so it would really be good to be ahead of the curve on this.
With regards to non-hockey hits... this has been a problem since about five minutes into the first ever hockey game. Fans, owners, referees, League officials, and most of all, players, must reach the conclusion that ithey would rather see Hossa play for ten years than to watch Torres clobber people for ten years.
It is by no means certain that this conclusion will be reached any time soon. I totally noticed Grapes calling it a "beauty" hit. The guy's heart is in the right place but his worldview hasn't changed in 50 years. You heard of the paleolithic diet? He's on the paleolithic education plan! No ideas that a caveman wouldn't have consumed.

How does that clown still have a job? Oh wait, precisely because he has so little shame or integrity that he'll stand up in public in front of God and be all Officer Barbradey "Nothing to see here, move along."
I have a great hockey trade for you - Gary Bettman to Sesame Street for Snuffelufagus and next year's 4th overall pick at the Muppet Entry Draft. Hope for Kermit, settle for Gonzo.

Possible great idea: the suspended player's team is on the hook for the injured player's salary for the entire duration of the injury (as would likely need to be verified by independent League doctors)
If you really want the point to stick, count it as part of the salary cap.
Thoughts?
